Pamela Wells Sheffield Award

The 2009 Pamela Wells Sheffield Award will be presented to Dr. Mary K. Boudreaux, pathobiology professor, during pre-game activities of the season opener vs. LA Tech on Sept. 5, 2009.

Pamela Wells Sheffield

The Pamela Wells Sheffield Award was established April 27, 1991 to honor, commemorate and perpetuate the memory and good works of Pamela Wells Sheffield. The selection of this Auburn Athletic Department and Auburn University award is coordinated by the Office of Alumni Affairs.

Pamela Wells Sheffield was a 1965 graduate of Auburn. She married an Auburn man and she sent her children to Auburn. She was, by any definition, the consummate Auburn woman. Her love for Auburn went beyond affection. Her love was a commitment to Auburn and to its people, its students, staff, faculty and alumni. Auburn people were, and are, her people.

History of the Pamela Wells Sheffield Award

Mary BoudreauxMary K. Boudreaux received her degree in veterinary medicine from Louisiana State University in 1979. After practicing for two years in California she was accepted into a clinical pathology residency at Cornell University, where she obtained a Ph.D. in 1986. Boudreaux has been a faculty member in the Department of Pathobiology since 1986 and has been involved in research and teaching in the area of hemostasis, particularly with respect to platelets. She enjoys working with veterinary students and has been program director for the Veterinary Scholars Program for the past four years, overseeing the activities of veterinary students working in research laboratories during the summer. She and her husband established an award endowment to honor Pat Teer ’59, a clinical pathologist who contributed many years of service to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Recently, they also have begun to endow an award in honor of Joe Spano, another dedicated clinical pathologist who gave many years of service to the college.

In addition to these awards, Boudreaux and her husband, Calvin Cutshaw, have contributed to several Auburn programs, including the Veterinary Scholars Program, the Department of Pathobiology Graduate Student Support Fund, and a Scholarship Fund in the College of Engineering. Boudreaux has been involved in multiple service activities at Auburn, including secretary of the University Senate in 2000, chair of the Auburn University Institutional Effectiveness committee for the SACS Self-Study in 2001 and 2002, chair of the Equity and Student Athlete Welfare Committee for the NCAA Athletics Certification Self-Study in 2005 and 2006, chair of the CVM Faculty Advisory Committee in 2005 and 2006, and currently vice-chair of the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics. She assists with conducting student-athlete exit interviews and greatly enjoys the privilege of hearing about their experiences as student athletes.

“Auburn University student-athletes are highly motivated and while here they not only mature into adults but also develop excellent time-management skills and a sense of community that will benefit them forever,” she said. “As one listens to their stories as they prepare to enter the next stage of their lives it is apparent that Auburn University and the athletics department have cared for their well-being at multiple levels. I am fortunate to have been given the opportunity to interact with veterinary students and student-athletes at Auburn University and to be part of the environment that is preparing the next generation of leaders and accomplished scientists.”
