Auburn Tradition: The History of Hey Day
Jump to Details about Hey Day 2025

Hey Day is a beloved tradition at Auburn University that began in 1947 to create a welcoming environment for returning World War II soldiers. The tradition involves handing out nametags to students, faculty, and staff, and encouraging them to say “hey” to each other. The day also includes free food and entertainment from campus groups.
The tradition originated when students who served in World War II felt unseen and unheard as they returned to campus after the war. The Student Government Association and Auburn’s student body pushed for a day to unite the Auburn Family and promote a friendly atmosphere. This is one of many Auburn traditions that has evolved over the years and makes Auburn such a welcoming campus.

The 78th Hey Day will be held on campus on Oct. 15, 2025 and includes live music, food, a pep rally and other activities.
