Auburn Tradition: The History of Hey Day

One of Auburn’s most unique traditions, “Hey Day” is an opportunity for new and current students to introduce themselves to one another.
Hey Day is a beloved tradition at Auburn University that began in 1947 to create a welcoming environment for returning World War II soldiers. The tradition involves handing out name tags to students, faculty, and staff, and encouraging them to say “hey” to each other. The day also includes free food and entertainment from campus groups.
The tradition originated when students who served in World War II felt unseen and unheard as they returned to campus after the war. The Student Government Association and Auburn’s student body pushed for a day to unite the Auburn Family and promote a friendly atmosphere. This is one of many Auburn traditions that has evolved over the years and makes Auburn such a welcoming campus.

“Hey Day” dates back to the end of World War II, when millions of veterans attended college on the G.I. Bill. A coalition of students handed out nametags to the incoming students, encouraging them to say “hey” to one another.
